Kaiyuan obtained B.Eng. in optical engineering from Zhejiang University, followed by M.Sc. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from University of California, Berkeley. His previous research focuses on understanding and controlling excitonic light-matter interactions in two-dimensional materials and devices, including band gap renormalization effects in monolayer semiconductors and tunable nonlinear optical response from nanomechanically twisted van der Waals heterostructures. His graduate work also involves the development of hyperspectral confocal microscopes for spatially- and time-resolved optical spectroscopy, as well as near-field scanning probe imaging techniques using second harmonic generation. In spare time he enjoys hiking, cycling, and good wines.
